Clinic
The Family Medicine Residency clinic provides our residents with experience in managing patients in all stages of life. Residents are assigned to pods within the clinic to promote the concept of a medical home for patients and continuity of care.
Residents have the opportunity to develop relationships with patients assigned to them and build upon skills required to manage patients within the office. Training experience in the office setting provides a simulation of the demands of a traditional family physician by integrating pediatrics, geriatrics, adult medicine, adolescent medicine, gynecology, maternity care and procedural visits into daily physician schedules.
The office setting provides abundant access to dermatology, orthopedic and women's health procedures. Within the clinic experience, residents will receive training on point of care ultrasound (POCUS) for musculoskeletal care and obstetrics. Residents are also encouraged to develop skills as a community physician and leader through community health education and advocacy and participate in grant-funded projects such as Reach Out and Read, Baby and Me Tobacco Free Program, and Smiles for Life.
Inpatient Care
Residents in our program receive an exceptional experience in hospital-based medicine. Residents are required to participate in inpatient and night-float rotations. Residents gain experience in managing critical care and medicine-surgery under the supervision of family medicine faculty and hospitalists. Access to procedures such as central line placement, paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture and intubation are common. SampsonRMC provides an atmosphere of resident autonomy for the management of patients and teaching rounds to promote medical decision-making and knowledge.
Within our program, residents will gain experience in managing patients with diverse pathology and become adept in the stabilization and transport of critically ill patients.
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine
We are proud to offer a robust Osteopathic Manipulation Technique (OMT) curriculum for incoming residents, both DO and MD. The curriculum within our program includes a regular noon didactics that covers osteopathic concepts, practices, and principles as well as a specific curriculum for allopathic physicians. Residents have the opportunity to practice OMT techniques during clinic visits and inpatient medicine rounds.
Full access to Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM) is offered to all residents for additional resources, opportunities to teach and to gain further clinical experience at OMT clinics as an elective and during sports medicine rotations.
Women's Health
The Women's Health curriculum at SampsonRMC is one of the strongest aspects of our residency program. Residents can expect to first assist with all cesarean sections and perform an average of 10 vaginal deliveries per month under the supervision of our obstetrics fellowship trained faculty member Dr. Joshua Ferrell.
In addition, all residents are provided with ample outpatient women's health experience in managing common gynecological issues such as dysfunctional uterine bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, and contraceptive management. Residents can expect to be competent in a variety of in-office procedures by graduation, including Nexplanon insertion/removal, intrauterine device insertion/removal, endometrial biopsy and others.
SampsonRMC prides itself on continuity of care and emphasizes this in our obstetrical curriculum by promoting resident provider continuity from conception through delivery. Residents manage patients through their pregnancies and provide all aspects of care for both mother and baby during their time here. This experience is important in fostering patient-provider relationships and promoting a return to the traditional family-centered maternity care provided by family physicians.
